If your lawn
is looking tired and thin or is full of moss there are several steps you can
take to improve it.
-
Aerate in spring or fall
to improve root development and water penetration
-
Then ‘top-dress’ by raking in ¼ to ½ inch of compost to
improve the soil
-
Follow by overseeding thin areas with Northwest adapted grass
seed blends
-
Repeat these steps annually as needed to improve poor lawns
Other lawn
care practices that will help keep your lawns healthy are:
-
Mow lawn higher (1-2 inches), mow regularly, and leave the
clippings (this is free fertilizer) Modern mulching mowers make this very
easy.
-
Use “natural organic” or “slow release” fertilizers
-
Water deeply, to moisten the whole root zone, but
infrequently, Lawns only need about one inch of water a week in the summer.
Moss in a lawn
is an indication of too much shade and an acid soil. If your lawn is full of
moss there are several solutions to the problem:
-
Rake out the moss or use an organic moss killer. Top dress
with soil and overseed with a grass seed for shady areas.
-
Use a Prilled dolomite lime to change the PH in the soil to
prevent further moss growth.
-
No lawn will grow in a totally shady area. Use a lawn
substitute such as a Stepable groundcover for these areas.
